The Secret Sauce of Characterization: Writing Tips for Authors to Leave a Lasting Impression

The best part of writing stories is creating the characters. This part of the process really gets my writing juices flowing.

I love creating new people and populating their lives and personalities with all sorts of fabulous things. I enjoy building their personas, fashioning their physical attributes, giving them flaws and strengths, and working out their motives.

And then there’s the story. Oh, how I look forward to putting them in sticky situations which they are forced to extricate themselves from.

When you think about it, we authors are like modern day Dr Frankenstein’s, bringing our story babies to life and then watching (gleefully) as we put them through all sorts of difficulties and obstacles. Are we heartless scribes when doing this? No. Ask any author and they’ll tell you they go through all their characters’ emotions with them, we laugh with them, cry with them and feel anxious for them.

Anyway, this isn’t getting on to the point of this article. The point of this is to talk about how you go about breathing life into your characters.
