Having grown up during the Cold War and living in fear of nuclear war, I decided never to watch that film. I knew people whod watched it and had the same reaction as you did. I've still never seen it and I'm 54 now. Plus I watched Threads in my teens and that freaked me out. That's another film about nuclear war. Still haunts me.
