A Writer’s Dilemma: How Do I Know What to Write?
The book business is an industry and, as such, as a writer, you must always know what’s selling and what’s not.
But, does this mean you have to write to market to earn any money?
The simple answer is yes.
But with a bit of leeway.
Let me explain. If you want to make any kind of money as a writer, especially an indie author, you do have to write to market.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t pick and choose a genre that you enjoy working in.
In fact, you are always better to pick a genre that you like otherwise you’ll quickly lose interest in the book you are writing. Then the book grows tiresome and you give up and at the end of the day you have no book to publish.
Or worse! You trudge along over several months writing a book you hate, publish it and discover it’s a turgid pile of nonsense that nobody likes.
It’s far better to write a book that you would enjoy reading.
For me, that’s romantic suspense and romantic fantasy. I love a good adventure story and that’s why I choose these two sub-genres of the romance book genre to write in. My love of the genre is reflected in the writing and the storylines.
